Awesome piece!! This is one of my favorite things about Portland and the Willamette Valley in general. People are willing to try out new ideas, concepts and ways we can collaborate together for a healthier, more equitable future. It's inspiring to see.
As someone who lived in Portland for 11 years (and is chomping to get back) this article reminded me of how beautiful that community is. There is something just... so special about The Rose City 🥹
I love Portland, OR! Lived in Beaverton for six years until I retired. Right by our apartment was a project that we watched develop. A large community garden was created, a nice walking path and safe play area with picnic tables and grills. Community is so important ☮️
That's a tougher question, because it involves changing the stories and slogans, and information people are surrounded by and embedded in. This series is part of how I'm trying to contribute to that.
Had to move away from Portland seven years ago, as it was getting too expensive for us to live in neighborhoods that felt safe. We went back last Christmas to see family, and were a bit unnerved to discover that the blue lights on towers in many parking lots (including at our hotel) were police cameras. That was new. The neighborhood Fred Meyers I used to shop at had a robbery/murder in the parking lot (caught on camera.)
So it is heartening to see that the spirit of the place we called home for decades is still alive and well! Thank you for sharing a side of PDX that rarely gets reported. That's the Portland I remember.
All of these community efforts are about ways to strengthen and celebrate resilience through shared abundance. Not just money, but talents and skills are shared to help one another.
There is powerful growth in collective wellbeing as a community. 🌹
Great piece filled with resources. I love Portland. I sent this piece to my son who lives in there and is looking for something to connect to. I hope it leads to a whole new discoveries.

This is so encouraging! You’ve inspired me to seek out the similar programs and opportunities in my area and support them. We’re in this together. ✊🏽
Yes! This is one of the reasons I love this city.
As I was reading I was thinking about how many of these initiatives are here in East Portland. How do we get west Portland in on the good stuff, more?
short answer... build resilient communities
Long answer... start any of the following projects and build resilient communities

Since I'm embedded in the east side, I guess I'm wondering how to make this work culturally contagious.

The Portland I know and love. What do you love?
